Chicago Furniture Bank: #Donate (And Help Turn Empty Spaces into Homes)

Have you heard of the Chicago Furniture Bank? Essentially this great non-profit is a spin off of a similar furniture bank created in Philadelphia. The story here is a couple of college students got together and came up with the idea to help low income individuals and families here in Chicago acquire furniture for free or at low cost – to furnish their first homes.

As we all know furniture is a costly first home or apartment expense and not everyone can get what they need to properly provide a comfortable home for their families.

That’s where the (Chicago Furniture Bank) comes in.

Are you wanting to be part of this mission – maybe by donating furniture you no longer need? If so, and you want information on how the CFB can pick up said furniture. Below are details on the how.

According to their website, they would rather you drop off – if possible – as this greatly offsets their costs. But if that’s not an option for you, then you can request they pick up by doing the following:

  1. Decide what you will donate, where you will place, etc.
  2. Fill out their pick up request form online.
  3. Wait for them to approve the request with your available date and time.
  4. Get everything ready for pick up day.

The Chicago Furniture Bank is located at:

(312) 752-0211

They also have an (FAQ page) which lists commonly asked questions along with what you can and can’t donate. Check this list first before putting in a pick up request.

The video below (from NBC 5) highlights the men behind the mission. The who, what and why. Check it out.

Need furniture? If you’re in need of furniture and want to avail of the services by the Chicago Furniture Bank – you must be part of and receive services by one of their agency partners. Walk-ins are not accepted. You must belong to one their partner agencies in order to be considered for their free furniture program.
